German immigrants began to settle on the south side of Jefferson City in the 1840s. Since many came from Münchberg in northern Bavaria, the south side was called Muenchberg. Muenchberg grew into a self-contained community of stores, churches, schools, and residences identified by its German character. At the beginning of the twentieth century, Munichburg (as it was by then known) had its own post office, fire station, physicians and druggists, florist and greenhouse, machine shop and foundry, two hotels, a large brewery,a 900-seat theater, meat markets, laundries, and a promotional businessmen’s association.
Most of the owners and workers of the businesses were of German descent. In 1999 merchants and residents formed the Old Munichburg Association to promote the economic development of the historic neighborhood, preserve its distinctive architecture and landscape of quaint shops and residential areas, and restore pride in it. Banners throughout the neighborhood welcome visitors to the past and present blended together in Old Munichburg.

German American hospitality.
